Eliminating Standards and Embracing Principles
ELIMINATING STANDARDS &
EMBRACING PRINCIPLES
In the pursuit of our craft, we often find ourselves grappling with the pressure of standards and ideals - the expectations of how we should perform, how our careers should progress, and how our lives should unfold.
But what if we shifted our focus from 'shoulds' to principles and values?
In a recent discussion in class, we explored how clinging to 'shoulds' can limit our potential and narrow the range of characters we can portray. When we avoid conflict or fear judgment, we may find ourselves pigeonholed into playing only one type of character.
This limitation stems from past experiences and beliefs that no longer serve us in the present.
By embracing principles and values, we can break free from these constraints and open ourselves up to a world of possibilities. Instead of measuring ourselves against past standards or ideals, we can approach our work with authenticity, curiosity, and a sense of discovery.
One of the key differences between standards/ideals and principles/values is their orientation in time. Standards and ideals are often based on past experiences or societal expectations. On the other hand, principles and values are about how we want to be in the present and future, guiding us towards integrity and freedom.
Standards and ideals are rooted in the past.
Principles and values are about how we want to be in the present and future.
What could be possible?
Here are a list of common ‘shoulds’ many actors face in comparison with values that can set your free in your work:

LETTING GO OF ‘SHOULDS’ DOESN’T MEAN ABANDONING EXCELLENCE OR AMBITION
It's about shifting our focus from the result to the process, from measuring up to external standards to exploring our potential with joy and curiosity. When we do this, we create space for true self-expression and growth.
So, as you continue on your acting journey, I invite you to reflect on your own 'shoulds' and consider how embracing principles and values could expand your possibilities. Let's approach our work with authenticity, curiosity, and a sense of adventure, knowing that success come from being true to ourselves.
